Meeting Minutes

January 26, 2010

 

Start: 7:10pm

 

Attended: David Herring, Ryan Hanford, Jennifer Londono, Chris Ahern, Lauren Talkington, Sarah Andersen, Cody Lloyd, JP Martin, Philip Coleman, Desiree Villalobos, Derrick Myers

I.      Introduction of Officers:

-          Chris Ahern: President

-          Ryan: Sergeant at Arms; talk to him if you have any ideas on law schools want to have come visit us

-          Jennifer: Vice President, go to person for community service ideas

-          Lauren: Treasurer, talk to her if you have any questions on dues or if you have any fundraising ideas

-          David: Web master, contact him if you have any question on the website or if you have any suggestions for what should be added to the website.

-          Sarah: Secretary, I type up minutes (which will be online this year) and I send out reminder emails on meeting and events.

-          Marsha Yowell: faculty advisor, great source of information

II.      About PAD:

-          Meetings: every other week (2 a month)

-          Benefit of PAD:

o   Discount on LSAT

o   Pamphlet on benefits (was up front of room at meeting, talk to an officer if interested in getting them)

III.      Member Intro

-          Ideas for semesters

o   Undergraduate internship information

o   Mock trials

o   More info on process of law school apps, personal statements

-          Law Schools you would like to see:


o   Berkley

o   University of Pennsylvania

o   Davis

o   Brooklyn Law

o   Mercy College (Detroit)

o   Cornelle

o   Georgetown

o   UCLA

o   UCLV

o   UofA

o    ASU

o   Phoenix Law College


IV.      Things to consider about law schools (from Dr. Yowell)

-          Three Kinds:

o   State

o   Private (not faith based)

o   Private (faith based)

-          Don’t limit self to just law schools you know. Might be another one out there that you would bring a unique quality to and would be a great fit for you

-          Get a notebook to hold things in with sections (applications- will need when apply for bar exam, etc.)

-          If you can- visit the university if not in person then virtually.

V.      How to become a member

-          PAD is for anyone interested in law school

-          As long as you have a GPA of at least 2.5

-          $100 to become a member (one time, national dues)

-          $15-$20 for chapter dues (pay every year)

-          Application (just basic info)

-          Initiation process (no hazing)- an allegiance to PAD

VI.      Overview of what is planned for semester (so far)

-          Advertisement/Recruitment: from officers

o   Tabling- in Union and/or in other school buildings

§  David will set up a time by next meeting and have a signup sheet

o   We have a board in the Communication building: can put up information there (law school info, community service opportunities, internships, mock LSAT times/dates )

o   Website: www.dlhservicesllc.com/nau_pad

§  Any ideas to add to website- email David

§  there will be a dialogue box so that people can send email to general email to get info

·         We need a person/people who would take over answering emails and have contact with new people

·         Email David to let him know if interested.

-          Advertisement/Recruitment: from members

o   Event to recruit- something to catch people’s attention

§  Everyone think of events that we would like to do and bring it to next meeting

o   Update flyers (take down out dated flyers please!)

VII.      Announcement

-          February 2nd: Willamette Law School will be coming to visit (exception to every other week meeting)

-          Feb 9th- Professor Glenn Phelps, Pre Law advisor will be speaking to us on:

o   Taking questions on what classes to take

o   Misconceptions of law school

-          Jennifer set up for UofA PAD officers will be down on Feb 19th and 20th come next meeting with ideas of what to speak to them about

-          Mayor Sarah Presler is interested in coming to a meeting- be thinking about questions for her

-          Apply for scholarships: there are scholarships available now for people interested in Pre-Law

o   Look into scholarships in your major

o   Jeff Downard is in charge of pre-law scholarships from Bar Association- see him w/ questions or for more information

-          Listen to NPR- helps you stay updated on what is happening

-          When thinking about ideas for this semester- think about what is frustrating you/ what you need help with

-          Internships: maybe we could do a fair for pre-law internships
